2015-2016 News

May: The Great Stone Face 2016 winner is El Deafo by Cece Bell.

If you have not had a chance to read this memoir in the form of a graphic novel, go and check it out from KPL! It's a great story! Many of the other titles were very much enjoyed by our students. You can still read the ones you missed and even get started on the list for next year! Thanks to our friends at the Kensington Public Library for making those titles available to us!

This month, our students studied animals, habitats, and the environment. We explored resources of information including FactCite.com. We also learned about Memorial Day and how it is different from Veteran's Day.

April: Celebrate Poetry month! Listen to this poem about words! Grades 4 and 5 voted on their favorite Great Stone Face book!

March: We had an amazing week of celebrating reading! Author and illustrator Marty Kelley visited with us during the school day and for our family reading night!

We thank all who sponsored the event(KEA, KES, PTO) Thank you also to all the guests who came to read to our students!

February: Students learned about writing reviews, hosted a Flat Stanley from Nebraska, and prepared for our upcoming author visit!

January: K-5 visited the European country of Finland which is represented by a few of our friends at KES. We had fun learning about Finnish culture, geography, foods, music, and more. Kantele players shared their music with us and the bonfire finale was amazing!

Ask your student: What animal only lives in Finland?

What do the colors of the Finnish flag represent?

Do you like salmiakki?

Why do you want to go to school in Finland?

How do the brothers in the Princess Mouse choose a bride?
