The following is information on how you can join the JMUES 5th Grade Band!
Sign-ups end September 3rd!
Step 1: Choose an instrument
Band instrument instruction is only available on the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and percussion.
No previous experience is required!
Students selecting percussion will learn on bell kits in grade 5, snare drum is introduced in grade 6.
Oboe can be a challenging instrument for a beginner. It is available with discussion and special permission.
Please note- piano, guitar, and strings are not offered as part of this program.
Instruction takes place during the school day. Students attend a weekly small group lesson, as well as a weekly full band rehearsal.
5th Grade Band is a full year commitment. Students choosing to participate in band for 5th grade will be enrolled in scheduled band classes for the duration of the school year.
Students are expected to maintain an at home practice routine.
Please have a conversation about perseverance and daily home practice before signing up for the program.

Step 2: Sign Up

Step 3: Obtaining an Instrument
Most families obtain an instrument by renting one. Instrument rental is not necessary if you own or have access to one of the instruments mentioned above. If renting an instrument is financially prohibitive please reach out to me directly. Instruments rented online will be delivered to the school and distributed in September.
Your child will need to have an instrument by September 16th. Students will also need the method book Standard of Excellence, Book 1 by Bruce Pearson. This book is available for purchase through the rental vendors. All students should also have a music stand for home practice.

Performances
The fifth grade band will perform at three concerts during the school year. Dates will be announced as soon as possible. Students will be asked to wear white on top and black on the bottom for concerts. More details will be provided before the first performance.
Recommended Additional Materials
Music stand for at home practice
Flute: cleaning rod, cleaning cloth, instrument care/cleaning kit
Clarinet: cleaning swab, cork grease, reeds (1 box of Rico, strength 2.5)
Alto Saxophone: neck strap, cleaning swab, cork grease, reeds (1 box of Rico, strength 2.5)
Trumpet/Euphonium: valve oil, slide grease
Trombone: trombone slide grease, slide oil, small spray bottle for water
Percussion: bell kit mallets, snare sticks
