THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS

Located in the north-western part of the continent of Africa, the Atlas Mountain range runs through Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.

It covers over 2,500 kilometers and the highest peak is the Jebel Toubkal (4,167 meters), which lies in the Moroccan part of the range.

The range can be divided into 6 parts, namely: the Middle Atlas, the High Atlas, the Anti-Atlas, the Tell Atlas, the Saharan Atlas, and the Aurès Mountains.

The slopes of the High Atlas and the Middle Atlas have thick forests containing pine, oak, and cedar trees.

Fauna in the Atlas consists of the Barbary macaque, the Barbary leopard, the Barbary stag, Barbary sheep, the Barbary lion (close to extinction), and the Atlas Mountain badger.

The mineral deposits found in this mountain range include gold, silver, zinc, lead, and iron.

The amazing topography of the range attracts rock climbers and campers. The views from the higher regions make it a popular destination for photographers.

The hottest month is July, during which the temperatures can go up to 30-degrees Celsius. The coldest month is January, and the temperates can go below 0-degree Celcius.

The population of the region consists of nomads and Berbers, similar to the locals we interacted with. The Berbers have been living in these mountains since 3000 B.C. They practice agriculture and animal rearing.
