Chapter Overview
Motivated by data that shows Australia and Brazil receive the same amount of sunlight, students learn how the same amount of sunlight can cause different rates of skin cancer. Through hands-on and Sim activities, active reading, and videos, students investigate whether all light is the same. They gather evidence that different types of light can lead to different changes in materials, and that different types of light have different wavelengths. Once students have identified ultraviolet (UV) light as the cause of skin cancer, they examine how the amount of melanin in skin cells can influence skin cancer risk. Students conclude the chapter by writing a short explanation of why Australia has such a high skin cancer rate
