Greetings, I have been teaching Science to middle schoolers since the early 2000's. I am a proud San Diegan, born and raised. San Diego just happens to be an ideal place to foster scientific literacy and understanding. The history of biotechnology and life sciences in the greater San Diego area can be traced back over half a century, with the establishment of technology centers such as The Salk Institute, The Scripps Research Institute California, and The University of California San Diego in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1978, Ivor Royston and collaborators launched Hybritech, sparking the broader multibillion dollar San Diego life sciences industry to follow. Today, Southern California and the greater San Diego area are home to a competitive and vibrant life sciences corridor and community, bringing together industry, academic institutions, hospitals, and technology innovators in a region the locals and BioSpace refer to as Biotech Beach.
We definitely are spoiled here in San Diego with a wealth of resources to access and learn from and communicate with.
Myself and the San Diego Unified School District are determined to increase the capacity of students in all STEM disciplines in order to be prepared for the rigors and demands of STEM careers.
