Student Led & Future Focused

TEAM Kelley is a Student Led/Future Focused classroom. What does this mean?

A student led classroom is one in which students make decisions and choices without needing to constantly consult the teacher.  In our Student-led classroom, students gain power and attention. Research says students learn best by doing, by questioning, and by figuring out solutions on their own. With today’s technology- we can better serve students by teaching them to ask better questions & empowering them to discover the answers themselves.  Reinforcing collaboration & critical thinking, instead of solving the problem for them, instills the belief that students can and should rely on one another to accomplish tasks. In TEAM Kelley, students learn to own their own learning, a skill they'll need to become lifelong learners. Students also learn the value in 'productive struggle' while they are in a safe environment. While it is definitely easier to just do things for the students, in the long run, helping them embrace the skills they need to do things for themselves, outweighs any other option.

Here's what a former TEAM Kelley student had to say:

"...Thank you for helping me to be a future focused learner, helping me fail forward, helping me to have productive struggles, being kinder than necessary to me all the time, helping me to understand what a good student means... You have taught me not just math, reading, or science, but life skills I will need forever..."

I will again be focusing on developing 21st Century skills, such as creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication, as well as other life skills such as Failing Forward, Growth Mindset, & Grit.  This will be achieved through facilitating engaging, yet challenging, learning experiences for students of all abilities, redesigning our learning space as we see fit, teaching pedagogy, and through the investment/use of technology in the classroom.  Each student will have a Chromebook, and the room is equipped with Apple TVs and projection screens, along with other devices/applications to further enhance and individualize our learning process.

I hope you will join us and support us in this learning adventure!
