Children learn best when they are alert, fit, happy, and well.
Daily attendance is required by the State of Virginia. It is also vital to a student's success. Student absence for any reason other than illness is strongly discouraged.
If your child is going to be absent from school, please call the office early in the morning to report and explain the reason for the absence. The school voice mail will receive messages before and after school hours. 540-375-7001
Homework may be requested by 10:00 am and picked up between 2:30 pm - 3:15 pm.
Please keep all sick children home, especially if they are exhibiting symptoms of sore throat, stomachache, and or fever. If your child has had a fever they should not return to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of medication. If you are unsure, keep them home and call your primary care provider. Students should report to the nurse upon returning to school if they have been out for several days due to illness with fever.
Suggestions on Caring for a Sick Child
Wash hands frequently with soap and water!
Make sure your child gets plenty of rest 10 - 11 hours are recommended.
Encourage fluids especially water, juice, gatorade and soups.
Help your child relax, read a story, give lots of tender loving care.
Cough into the elbow, and sneeze into the sleeve to keep hands clean.
Keep a child's environment tobacco free.
Minimize time spent with other children who have colds and flu symptoms.
A yearly flu vaccine is recommended for children ages 6 months and older.
Serve a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.
Clean household surfaces like counter tops, phones, tv remotes, toys and keyboards frequently.
Consider using a cool mist humidifier if ok with family doctor.
During and after an illness it is a good time to clean your child's bedroom linens, and obtain a new toothbrush.
