Masters of Science in Reading with a Reading Specialist Endorsement from Radford University
B.S. Interdisciplinary Studies from Radford University
My philosophy of teaching has evolved from many years of teaching and continuing to view myself as a learner. As I reflect on my beliefs regarding teaching and learning, I find that my mission as a teacher is:
to teach each child everyday on their level
to promote a positive learning environment
to spark learner enthusiasm for learning
to provide a strong foundation for lifelong learning
to never allow myself to stop being a learner
To accomplish this, I enjoy applying a wide variety of strategies based on my beliefs and on research. It is important for me to make changes in my classroom so I can keep up with the newest research and trends. Therefore, I can meet the needs of my students.
I started out teaching at East Salem Elementary as a Kindergarten teacher. I also taught second grade at East for many years. During that time I went back to school and received a Master's degree in Reading. A Reading Specialist position became available at West Salem Elementary and that's what landed me here!
In my spare time I enjoy shopping, selling RF skincare, cheering for the HOKIES, traveling, being a taxi mom, being a spectator as my girls play sports, gardening, taking jeep rides, cooking, being a grill-master on my BGE, socializing with friends and spending quality time with my girls and our furry friend Piper Ann.
