Welcome to English 8!! To succeed you will need to be very organized, come to class and expect to participate every day, and of course keep up with all class work and homework that is assigned.

Goals and Topics: Some topics include: elements of literature, literary analysis, research and application, short and extended responses and grammar. Students will be introduced to various forms of text throughout the year, some of which include non-fiction texts such as speeches, newspaper articles and journals. Various forms of fiction will also be covered, such as short stories, poetry, dramatic works and novels. Reading skills will be worked on tediously and vigorously throughout the school year with a strong focus on nonfiction text. Students must make sure that they are always on top of any reading assignments that are given.

Lastly, students will be required to complete a Writing Portfolio by the end of the year. The portfolio allows each student to focus on his or her writing skills in various styles and genres. For each quarter, students will write an essay related to the thematic topic for that unit. The portfolio will count towards the final exam as well.

Writing styles include: Informative, Argument/Persuasive, and Narrative. The portfolio will be an ongoing assignment. Students will be adding and revising writing pieces throughout the school year.
