  • All-State: Monday, March 28, 2022 at University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls, Iowa)


Large Group Categories:

  • One Act Play - a group performs either one act from a longer play or a whole play consisting of only one act; unlimited students; under 35 minutes

  • Readers Theater - a group performs a presentation of a work, read from a script; no props besides chairs/blocks/ladders/etc.; 2-15 students; under 25 minutes

  • Ensemble - any type of memorized acting scene; no costuming or props allowed except for 7 chairs and a table (bring your own table); maximum 6 students; under 15 minutes

  • Choral Reading - a "choral" (words, not music) unified ensemble reading from a script; movement/dance/costumes/make-up/set/props used to support text and message; 3-15 students; under 15 minutes

  • Group Improv - a group chooses one topic from a list of three and is given two minutes to prepare a scene; 2-5 students; under 5 minutes

  • TV News - a video "broadcast" is prepared in advance and displayed for judging. The video might be a traditional approach to the news with international, sports, weather, etc. or it might be a thematic approach to the news. Must include a commercial. 2-15 students; under 10 minutes

  • Short Film - a film is prepared in advance of the contest. The film can be of any genre, from comedy to action, claymation or film noir. 2-15 students; under 5 minutes

  • Musical Theater - students perform a series of selections from a musical play or a single song with background music. Singing/dancing/acting. No costumes or props except for 7 chairs and a table you may provide yourself. 2-6 students; under 10 minutes

  • Group Mime - a group acts out a scene (or theme) in silence. Background music (without lyrics) is allowed. No costuming or props allowed. 6 chairs available; 2-6 students; under 7 minutes

  • Solo Mime - an individual acts out a scene in silence, usually to background instrumental music. No costuming or props allowed. One chair available. 1 student; under 5 minutes

  • Radio News - a radio "broadcast" is prepared in advance and is played for judging. The "broadcast" includes international, national, and local news, sports, a commercial and a special feature. 2-8 students; between 5 and 6 minutes


Individual Categories:

  • Acting - a one-act play or segment of a play, book, or other published material; under 8 minutes

  • Poetry - speak a poem or poems; under 6 minutes

  • Prose - speak a section of a book or other published material; under 6 minutes

  • After Dinner Speaking - a speech such as what would be given after a formal dinner about anything; under 5 minutes

  • Improv Acting - a short made-up skit, often humorous. 3 characters and 2 situations are drawn, must include 2 characters and one situation from those drawn; under 5 minutes

  • Radio News Broadcasting - a radio program made up of current news and drawn up and performed by one person that should cover most news including a commercial and a news flash; between 4 and 5 minutes

  • Spontaneous Speaking - a short made-up speech concerning important issues. draw 3 topics and choose 1; under 5 minutes

  • Original Oratory - a speech created by the speaker; under 8 minutes

  • Review - a general review of a book, movie, album, or other published material; under 8 minutes

  • Storytelling - speaker tells a short story, memorized. speaker must sit on a stool and pretend to be telling the story to an audience; under 5 minutes

  • Literary Program - a combination between poetry and prose categories; under 8 minutes

  • Public Address - speaker gives another person's speech such as the "Gettysburg Address" by Abraham Lincoln; under 8 minutes

  • Expository - a "how-to" speech; a speech that explains how something works; an explanatory speech; under 6 minutes

  • Solo Musical Theater - speaker sings a song and acts it out
