A Night with Bill Smith:

Understanding College Financial Aid and Paying for College

Thursday, March 21

6:00 - 7:30 PM

Bill Smith’s presentation takes the mystery out of financial aid and college cost for students and parents. Learn about the different types of financial aid and how to choose a college you can afford. Understanding financial aid enables you to make good college choices and informed decisions to manage college costs. We’ll discuss how to identify your student’s need and merit

profile and learn how to match that with college awarding policies so you can identify affordable colleges.

Topics include:

·       Types of aid: grants, scholarships, work/study, loans.

·       How do colleges decide how much aid to give?

·       Need- and merit-based aid, what's the difference, how to get it?- - What do you need to know about financial aid applications: the FAFSA and the Profile forms?

·       Using net price calculators to estimate your cost after aid at any college.

·       Estimating the 4-year bottom line: how much will you pay for a college degree?

·       How can you estimate how much college debt you’ll need?

·       How can you decide if college debt is reasonable and affordable?

For more about Bill Smith, please visit:

Freeport High School has a non-perishable food and toiletries pantry to support students and families.  Students can access that on Thursdays and Fridays.  We are going to pilot a program, "Fresh to Go" which will be a bag of fresh food: oranges, apples, carrots, greens, milk, bread, cheese etc. along with some non-perishables.  Pick up is on Friday afternoons, just before students catch the bus or ride home.   If you are interested in this, please fill out this form.   All information remains confidential.  FMI contact: Dede Bennell, Outreach Coordinator.
