#Dance 2-4

ALL students will be required to have a spiral notebook to use for daily vocabulary journaling. Below, are the direction for organizing and setting up your journal in the proper format as well as an example of what is should look like. If you miss class you are responsible for gathering missed materials. Journals/written work are 33% of your 6-week grade.

FIRST 6 WEEKS

1. Grapevine – step side, step behind, step side, dig (to the right or left)

2. Step Touch – step right dig left, step left dig right

3. Three-Step-Turn – a turn of three steps to the right (clockwise) or left (counter-clockwise)

4. Jazz Square – four walking steps performed in a square

5. Posture - a way of carrying yourself

6. Chassé – “to chase”… step, together, step. Feet kiss in the air. Gallop

7. Ball Change – Weight shift from one foot to the other, and back

8. Pivot Turn – turn on two legs with eight transfer from one leg to the other. Feet stationary but swivel

9. Opposition – as with walking, arms should move in opposition to legs when executing a chasse or a pirouette prep

10. Isolation - moving 1 body part at a time

11. Parallel - stance where toes face forward and feet are parallel

12. Turnout – the outward rotation of the hips, legs, and feet. Toes point toward diagonal.

13. Ballet Arm Positions (1st, 2nd, 3rd)

14. Demi plié – “to bend”… a bending of the knee or knees

15. Relevé – “to rise”… a raising of the body/heels onto the toes

16. Tendu – “stretched”… the working leg is extended to either the front, side or back, gradually along the floor until only the tip of the toe remains touching the floor

17. Passé – “to pass”… working foot is placed at the knee of the standing leg

18. Jazz Walks – stylized walk…toe, ball, heel

19. Kick Ball Change – low kick in front with right, ball change to the back with right (can also be done on the left)

20. Kick Step Touch – low kick in front with right, cross step with right, touch left (and reverse)

21. Spotting - keeping your eyes on 1 focal point while turning in order to minimize dizziness

22. Cross Ball Change – cross in front with right, step out and ball change with left (and reverse)

23. Pirouette – “spin, whirl”… Turn on one foot, other leg in passé

24. Chainé – “chains, links”… a turning movement in which the dancer executes a half turn on each foot travelling and rotating in a single direction

25. Pas de Bourré – three quick steps: back, side, front (up, up, down) (relevé, relevé, plié)

26. X Jump – leap off of one foot, arms hit a high V, legs hit a low V, land on the other foot

27. Grand jeté – a jump from one foot to the other, working leg sweeps into the air

28. Grand Battement – “large beating”… the working leg is raised from the hip into the air and back down again

NEW TO DANCE 2:

29. Battements in a circle -2 front, 1 side, 1 back, alternating feet and rotating body

30. Piqué turns - to prick onto a straight leg in relevé while lifting opposite leg to passé and turning

31. Tilt - a side battement with a lean of the body, can be jumped

32. Fan kick - a circular grand battement

33. Turning pas de bourré- back, side, front, while turning over shoulder

34. Double pirouettes - to whirl twice

35. Inside pirouette- turning towards the standing leg

36. Chainé-piqué turn combo -- alternating chainé and piqué turns

37. Drop roll - a lunge and twist to the floor

Journals are graded here, however entries continue to the 1st 2 sets below during this grading period.

SECOND 6 WEEKS

2. Downstage – front of stage

3. Stage right – right side of the stage as one faces the audience

4. Stage left – left side of the stage as one faces the audience

5. Center stage – the middle of the stage

6. Marketing/publicity – promotes the show

7. Stage manager – is in charge of all the tech crew and backstage hands

8. Tech crew/stage hands – have various technical theater jobs, including running the light/sound boards, moving props and backstage equipment

9. House manager – is in charge of ushers, ticket takers, box office, audience concerns

10. Sound designer – cuts, splices, and mixes the music

11. Lighting designer – creates the lights for the show

12. Lighting board operator – runs the lights during the show

13. Sound board operator – runs the music during the show

14. Stylist – creates the hair designs

15. Makeup artists – creates the makeup designs

16. Costume designer/seamstress – creates the costumes

17. Ushers – helps people to their seats, takes tickets, picks up theater

18. Artistic director – creates the overall design of the show

19. Composer/artist – writes the music

20. Fly operator – runs the ropes that lift/lower things on stage

2nd 6 Weeks Begins

21. Conductor – leads live musicians

22. Master craftsman/set design – designs scenery and props

23. Choreographer – creates the dances

24. Principal dancer/actor – best/lead performer

25. Corps de ballet/support cast – backup dancers in a ballet

1. 1st-5th Position – ballet positions of the arms and feet created by Pierre Beauchamp

2. Ballet Barre – handrail used during ballet exercises

3. Demi Plié – “to bend”… half-bend of the knees (on two legs)

4. Port de Bras – carriage of the arms

5. Relevé – “ to rise”… heels off the ground, balancing on balls of the feet

6. Tendu – “to stretch”… leg fully extended, big toe touching the floor

7. Sauté – “to jump”

8. Degagé – “to disengage”… leg fully extended brushed off the floor, foot about 6 inches off the floor

9. En croix - "in a cross," a pattern of front, side, back, side or back, side, front, side

10. Rond de Jambe – “circle of the leg”

11. Chainé Turn – “chain”… a series of half turns

12. Échappé – “to escape” … feet jump from closed to open

13. Grand Plié – a full plié, or bending of the knees (on two legs)

14. Changement – “to change” … jumping in fifth position, changing to the opposition fifth position in the air (R to L, or L to R)

15. Coupé – pointed foot positioned at the ankle of the standing leg

16. Petit jeté – “to throw” … a leap from one foot to the other

17. Grand jeté – a big leap

18. Arabesque – stand on one leg, other leg extended behind

19. Battement Piqué – to prick the floor in a beating motion

20. Piqué Turn – step onto piqué, working leg executes turned-out passé, turn towards standing leg

21. Temps Levé – a hop from one foot onto the same foot, other leg raised in any position

22. Pas de Bourré – three quick steps (back, side, front/up, up, down)/Turning Pas de Bourré – a pas de bourré executed while turning over your back shoulder

23. Pirouette Turned Out – a pirouette executed with a turned-out prep and passé

24. Tombé – “to fall” … dancer “falls” onto a bent working leg

25. Glissade - "to glide" a small gliding jump from one foot to the other

26. Passé Turned Out – “to pass” … pointed foot positioned at the knee of the standing leg

27. Grand Battement – “big beat” … leg fully extended brushed off the floor, 6 inches or higher

28. Balancé – “rocking” … a waltz step

29. Reverence - "to revere" a curtsey/bow combo at the end of class to thank the teacher and the musician

30. Développé - "to develop" the leg travels front coupé to passé to an extended position in any direction

31. Temps lié - "time connected" a tendu to a plié to a tendu

32. Cambré - "to arch" a bending of the body

33. Sous-sus - " under over" a crossed position of the legs/ankles in relevé

34. En dedans - "inside" rotation

35. En dehors - "outside" rotation

36. Pas de chat - "step of the cat" jump from passé on one leg to passé on the other leg and them close

37. Sissonne - a jump from 2 feet to 1

38. Chassé en tournant - "turning chassé" to rotate while legs are chasing

39. Soutenu - "sustain" and rotating turn after stepping to sous-sus

40. Adagio - "slow" portion of class

41. Tour jeté - "turning throw" a jump where the legs pass by one another in the air while alternating battements and landing on the opposite leg

42. En dedans pirouette - inside whirl

43. Saut de chat - "jump of the cat" a leap with executing a développé

44. Pas de valse - "step of the waltz" a waltzing step of down, up, up

45. Fouette sauté - "a whipped jump" battement one leg and rotate body away from it while it is in the air

46. Frappé-"to strike"

Choreography (ALL CLASSES):

Choreography-level 1-2

1. Shape - the shape of your body/movements, group shape, self shape

2. Space:

3. placement - where the dancers stand on stage (stage left, stage right, down stage, up stage, etc.)

4. direction - which way the dancers travel (forward, backward, sideways, etc.)

5. pathway - the pattern the dancers follow as they move across the floor (straight, zig zag, in a circle, etc.)

6. focus - the direction of your gaze

7. facing - the direction of your body

8. Level - distance from the ground (high, medium, low)

9. Formation - the pattern that the dancers stand/perform in (staggered lines, circle, diagonal line, etc.)

10. Timing:

11. rhythm - syncopation of the music

12. tempo - fast or slow beat
