Welcome to Patsy Sommer and my class!

I am excited to work with you and your family.

I teach 3rd & 5thTAG Math and Talent Development to 1st-3rd and 5th grades.

I am from San Antonio, but have traveled the world since I was sixteen, living in three different countries, including Austria, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. I have also traveled throughout the United States and visited many areas of Europe, South America, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. These experiences have magnified the value of diversity, helping me to appreciate the contributions of other cultures.

I have a B.A. from the University of Texas in Middle Eastern Studies and a Masters of Education from Texas State University. The 2023-2024 school year will be my 17th teaching. I was previously at Blackland Prairie Elementary school in RRISD for ten years.

My son completed his Masters at the University of Texas and works in the university sports world and my daughter graduated from George Washington University in D.C. and is working in advertising in New York City. I enjoy sharing my home with two shelter cats who keep me busy!

Besides traveling, I enjoy reading, as well as watching movies and eating different types of food. I get my exercise doing yoga and I love to ski. I'm willing to try most things (at least once) including snowboarding, white water rafting, the flying trapeze, and even volunteering with a political campaign! I am a big theater and live music fan and a frequent visitor at a variety of art museums.

I am also an advocate for voting. I often spend my off time registering voters as a Volunteer Deputy Registrar.

My Teaching Plan

1)  Expose students to the creativity of math and to maintain their curiosity while developing an inquiry relationship with math.

2) Implement differential learning strategies to address the needs of all students incorporating the use of Depth & Complexity Icons, as well as other tools.

3) Execute an effective behavior management plan incorporating appropriate consequences while maintaining mutual respect and dignity.

4) Design creative lesson plans using an inquiry approach that make learning exciting and relevant on a daily basis.

5)  Interweave the Arts into lessons whenever possible.

6) Value diversity and other cultures by revealing the world beyond the local campus. Addressing equity issues within our classroom, campus, and district.
