Bio: I grew up in Camas, WA, then attended college in Oregon at Western Oregon University where I earned a B.S. in History and a Minor in Business. I completed a teaching credential program at Concordia in Portland and received an MAT. I spent my first four years teaching 6th grade Science and Social Studies in Maple Valley, WA. My wife and I decided do move back down to Southwest Washington when our first son was born. This will be my 14th year of teaching. Currently I am teaching 7th and 8th Grade STEM. In my free time I like to spend time with family and friends, traveling, enjoying the outdoors and going out on the river.
Subjects Taught:
STEM 7th and 8th Grade
Flight and Space-The exciting world of aerospace comes alive through the Flight and Space (FS) unit. Students become engineers as they design, prototype, and test models to learn about the science of flight and what it takes to travel and live in space. They solve real-world aviation and space challenges and plan a mission to Mars.
Medical Detectives-Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, and investigate disease outbreaks.
Magic of Electrons-Through hands-on projects, students explore electricity, the behavior and parts of atoms, and sensing devices. They learn knowledge and skills in basic circuitry design, and examine the impact of electricity on the world around them.
Design and Modeling-Students discover the design process and develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives.. Students learn and utilize methods for communicating design ideas through sketches, solid models, 3-D modeling, Autodesk Inventor and mathematical models. Students will understand how models can be simulated to represent an authentic situation and generate data for further analysis and observations. Students work in teams to identify design requirements, research the topic, and engage stakeholders. Using Autodesk® design software, students create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio to showcase their innovative solutions.
Advanced Design-The STEM Advanced Design course is a comprehensive program that equips students with advanced skills in design, technology, and engineering. It is structured to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical experience through a series of well-defined units and assessments.
