Reading Homework

Just as you would take your child to sports practice or dance lessons, reading is a skill that needs to be practiced daily! I recommend my 5th grade students are reading for at least 20 minutes each night. I am not directly checking to see if this is being completed but research shows that nightly practice will help students transfer the skills being taught in school, and to improve his/her reading fluency and vocabulary. On this website under the useful links for families tab you will find a list of generic questions you can ask your child after they finish reading an article or story. The graphic below illustrates the significant importance of nightly reading.
