NEW POST - 8.11.2021 Lesson Resource - ANALYZE Your Screen Time!
In this 5-hour project, students reflect on their screen time. How much screen time is too much? What makes screen time purposeful and productive? Students will learn that not all screen time is created equal, and will present their findings with Adobe Spark Page. The end result will be a dynamic presentation that translates the data from their activity and develops a written analysis of their views on the screen time.
Adobe Spark Page enables students to publish dynamic content, empowering them to synthesize written and visual content. This project can be expanded using Adobe InDesign.
This lesson plan was created by Michael Cohen, the Tech Rabbi, an Adobe Master Teacher and Designer turned Educator who wants to help everyone build their creative confidence.
The attached resources for this are ready for students to use, including step-by-step guides and all the resources they need to get started.
Note on document formats: The attached documents are included as both PDF and Google Docs. In the Google Doc version, you can view without needing a log on. You can also export to any standard file formats (e.g. PDF or .docx), or "Make a Copy" and edit (including using the automatic translation tool) to adapt to suit your needs.

Piloted in 2018, Gaming Concepts has already made a huge impact, improving overall GPA by 1.7 and an increase of 10% in attendance for students who took the course.
82% of students surveyed participating in the free Gaming Concepts curriculum say they have never participated in any other extracurricular activity.
Gaming Concepts is a turnkey curriculum available 100% for free to any educators interested in implementing it. The full course book, available to download as a PDF, includes instructions on how to secure approval from your administration and school board, and peer reviewed notes from Wichita State University.
Various LEAs handle the course differently, but there is not a specific course for eSports. The CTE course that I have seen utilized within LEAs is listed below. There are three different PEIMS codes so that would allow for three years of participation. These courses are listed under all of the IT programs of study. They are also in the STEM programs of study: Cybersecurity and also Programming and Software Development. There are no pre-requisites for the course either. Depending on which programs of study your school offers, these could be a great and exciting option for your campus!

Independent Study in Evolving/Emerging Technologies (1st, 2nd, & 3rd Time Taken)
There are several different testing agencies you can choose from. TEA has furnished information on all of the approved IBC providers in this handy one-pager. I took a deep-dive with our friends at Pearson for a couple of different reasons. Their website contained a ton of great information for normal people like me who want to learn more about the opportunity, and their exam was the least expensive coming in at $250.
It is important to note that to take a test, you must first complete the registration, attestation and payment process on the PTA Global website. You must also possess a valid CPR/AED certification as described in the CPT Exam Candidate Handbook.
A personal trainer assesses behavior adaptation readiness and offers guidance in the development of realistic, client‐centered goals related to health, fitness and wellness. In addition, they develop and administer programs designed to promote optimal fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. The certifying entities below have a variety of domains and competencies, which include interviews and assessments, program design and implementation, exercise leadership & client education, professional conduct, and legal and professional responsibilities.
Watch the video below for more information.
They often lack critical device protections and organizations fail to segment their networks in order to reduce the attack surface. Engage with the video "Anatomy of an IoT Attack" from CISCO.

Just the TERM "Analytics" sounds complicated to me! So before I wrote about this industry based certification, I decided I needed to take a look at the online training and certification test. This stuff is REALLY interesting.
Google Analytics lets you (OR more importantly YOUR STUDENTS) measure advertising return on investment, as well as track Flash, video, and social networking sites and applications. I honestly think students who are business minded or want to understand more about online advertising and how companies use reports or analytics to improve websites will really like this certification program. Students who love posting videos and photos will also enjoy seeing how much traffic they actually generate.
The training is well organized and easy to access. Students should follow the steps below:
Complete two FREE, interactive, online training courses
There's a timer that will start to count down when they begin the assessment. A student can NOT pause the timer once it starts. If you leave the assessment — for example, if you close your browser or your computer shuts down — the timer will immediately expire. You'll have to wait 1 day to take the assessment again.
Students will receive 90 minutes to complete the assessment.
Students need to score a minimum of an 80 to earn a certification. If they don't meet that benchmark the first time, they can review the online training and repeat the test 24 hours later.
Entrepreneurship and Small Business is a certification from Certiport, sponsored by Intuit and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, that ensures tomorrow's leaders are prepared with the toolkit they need to get ahead in today's competitive landscape. Whether you are starting a bakery or launching the next billion dollar startup, ESB validates a students' understanding of core business principles, including the essentials needed to launch and maintain a successful business.
Candidates for ESB certification will be expected to have key conceptual knowledge of entrepreneurial and small business principles through at least 150 hours of instruction. Please note that it is not required for students to have real-world experience as a small business manager in order to take and pass the exam. Successful completion of this certification will validate the skills and knowledge for those students interested in working in a middle-skill trade profession as their own boss and those with entrepreneurship and small business career aspirations.
In the CTE world, it is a fairly common opinion that a Microsoft Office Certification is one of the basic certifications that pretty much ALL students should try for. It requires basic knowledge of a program that EVERY one should understand how to use in all professions.
It is my personal opinion and hope that the Entrepreneurship & Small Business Certification will become the NEW basic CTE certification - or at least the next step from a MOS certification. We NEED more business owners, entrepreneurs, innovators, and money makers in this area! Students who are successful on the TEA Approved Industry Based Certification Test have developed competencies in marketing, opening their own business, financial and business management. All of these are very useful in any industry and prepares students for real-world experiences. Besides, who doesn't want to be the BOSS?
INTUIT is the official sponsor of this program. Their commitment to empowering and inspiring educators to achieve excellence is evident through the many free resources they provide.
You can learn more about the certification test on this DOCUMENT. I normally recommend use of the Essentials of Entrepreneurship Curriculum from BE Publishing. This DOCUMENT shows the alignment of this curriculum to the exam competencies and even tells you EXACTLY which page you can find it on. I often recommend the eReadiness curriculum because I think it is easy to use and extremely affordable. You can read more about their unlimited site license HERE. However, there are many different curriculums available.
You'll find school test site information to purchase the ESB Certification Test HERE.
We would LOVE to hear how your students do. Keep in Touch!
If you ask me to identify one POSITIVE thing that has come out of this unprecedented time due to the global pandemic and being quarantined - if I want to look like a SUPER MOM, I would say "the time I was able to spend at home with my family". However, since my kids are STILL at home attending school virtually, I just can't... It has been really difficult. It may feel like a great memory on down the road. But at this moment I guess I am not a super Mom.
What HAS been a really AWESOME thing to result from these days of COVID are virtual conferences and really innovative online learning. I like to think that myself and my co-workers at Region 10 are LEADING the pack with what we have been doing! :)
The Region 10 ESC CTE Awesomeness aside, I want to tell you about a FREE Virtual CTE Conference that started today. The Virtual CTE Conference from Paxton Patterson is available now through December 1st. It features opportunities to connect with peers, best practices, and many tips and tidbits to keep your CTE programs running STRONG. You can view the Conference Booklet Here. They have a pretty cool lineup including Perkins and Federal Funding Update from ACTE and... are you ready for this?? a SELF-CARE Series - YOGA CLASS! That sold me. Not that I do YOGA... but I will sure try it for free.
Presentation Schedule HERE and registration on the BIG BLUE BUTTON Below. Hope to see you in a virtual session!

Don't panic...
If you've heard that 1's and 2's will auto code for the upcoming Fall submission - This IS correct.
TEA has created an auto-coding system that will automatically code students annually during the SUMMER SUBMISSION based on student course completion. The FALL SNAPSHOT SUBMISSION will happen very soon. Normally, during this time, LEA's would need include CTE Indicator Codes (1,2,etc.). Student information systems (SIS), like Skyward, TXEis, Tyler have not been updated to allow for this process just yet. Since your SIS will likely require a submission in this field, TEA advises that you can include an entry in this field, any code, to satisfy the fatal error you will see if you attempt to submit without one. This code will not be utilized in TSDS.
Now, about this NEW automated system of coding....
For the 2020-2021 school year, this will take place in the SUMMER SUBMISSION after course completion for students in the 6th through 12th grade.
I would like to assume that SIS systems will have updated to meet this requirement before this submission takes place.
Being the strange data person that I am... I have spent a little bit of time looking through TSDS Data Standards for the 2020-2021 School Year. (I know, I need a new hobby!)
I can tell you that I see three new code tables pertaining to CTE that I would begin to think about it.
C227 STATE-CAREER-CLUSTER-CODE
C228 FEDERAL-CAREER-CLUSTER-CODE
C226 VENDOR-CODE pertains to the CTE IBC's. You may be working on submitting student certifications for reimbursements now. (REMINDER - The deadline has been extended to November 2, 2020. It will not be extended further for any reason!) Now, I am definitely not a PEIMS expert. That being said, I would probably come up with a handy spreadsheet to track my IBC vendors and costs. Someone who IS a PEIMS expert will probably be able to tell you, at some point, what those new code tables will require. My motto in all situations is to plan ahead and stay ready! As always, we are here to assist you with any questions or concerns. We can't promise to have ALL the answers. But, we can assure you that we will work with you to find what you need.
If you are in search of asynchronous training for your staff, we have options available this Fall!
