Decoding Strategies
Sometimes a reader can get stuck on a difficult word, which may in turn affect the comprehension of that piece. Here are some strategies that will help students decode an unknown word. We don't skip words, guess words, or rely on the pictures.
Lefty Larry- start at the left side of the word
Grapheme Grasshopper-hop to each grapheme (letter(s) that represent sounds) and say each sound
Blendy Wendy-
Use your finger to cover up the ending to reveal the base word
Skip over the difficult word to see if from context it can be figured out
Substitute a word that makes sense
Ask your child ,"Does that sound right?", "Does it make sense?", "Does it look right?"
