WEEK 1 - February 3rd

DUE WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5th - Read the story of Beowulf that you were given in class and answer the three questions below in writing:


  1. What aspects of this story seem "medieval" to you? (Be as specific as you can, citing details from the story when possible)
  2. Make a list of 5 - 10 cultural clues this story seems to provide about life in the Middle Ages.
  3. How does Beowulf (the person in the story) compare to the modern conception of a hero; could he be an Avenger? Explain why or why not?

DUE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10th:

Use this link from the Metropolitan Museum of Art: Europe 500 - 1000 A.D. and select three works of art from the "Dark Ages" to examine. Then complete the template (LINK is here - Met Works of Art 500- 1000 AD Template) that you were given in class.

WEEK 2 - February 10th

DUE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14th:

1. Read Chapter 1 in the class Daily Life book and take notes on the Notes for Chapter 1: Medieval Society sheet

2. Read Chapter 8 in the class Daily Life book and take notes on the sheet titled, Big Idea Notes for Chapter 8: The Medieval World

WEEK 3 - February 24th

DUE MONDAY, MARCH 2nd: Byzantine Empire Travel Brochure (Summative Assessment). Be sure to view the rubric and assignment sheet for this assessment.

WEEK 4- March 2nd

DUE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4th: FIRST PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING:

1) LISTEN to "The Origins of the Shiite-Sunni Split" (click to listen)

2) READ "Islam Divided: Sunni and Shiite" AND the BBC article

3) READ "Sunni's and Shia: Islam's Ancient Schism"

THEN answer the two questions below:

QUESTION #1: Briefly summarize WHY and HOW Islam split into Shiites and Sunnis (1-2 paragraphs)

QUESTION #2: When considering Shia and Sunni Muslims today, what do you think are the most important differences and similarities? Why?

DUE FRIDAY, MARCH 6th: Read Islamic Science in the Middle Ages and briefly answer the three Writing and Discussion questions at the end of the article. The class will be participating in an activity based on this article.

WEEK 5- March 9th

ON FRIDAY, MARCH 13th: RISE OF ISLAM TEST WILL TAKE PLACE IN CLASS. Please take time to review your study guide this week as you prepare to take the test.

DUE FRIDAY, MARCH 13th: SELECT TOPIC for DAILY LIFE RESEARCH PROJECT

WEEK 6- March 16th

For students who missed the Rise of Islam Test on Friday, March 13th, please look at Power School and focus on completing any of the formative assessments that were part of the Rise of Islam Unit that are missing. Links to these assignments are above. Feel free to email me with any questions.

WEEK 7- March 23rd

I will start writing Mid-Semester Reports at the end of the this week. Please be sure to check PowerSchool and complete any missing assignments. Be sure to email me if you have any questions.


WEEK 9 - April 6

Welcome back (virtually) to Remote Learning. We will begin a new unit on the Vikings this week. I have already mailed a book (Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology) for you to start reading. Please be sure to check Google Classroom for homework announcements and assignments for this week and from now on.
