After opening the year with an extension of fourth-grade decimal work, students extend their understanding of multiplying and dividing whole numbers from third and fourth grades including mental math, reasoning, conceptual models, and algorithms. The year then moves its attention to fractions! First, students will extend their work with fraction equivalence in fourth grade to the addition and subtraction of fractions. They’ll work flexibly to ensure they can mentally or numerically solve, reason, and estimate their calculations. Students extend this fraction work to begin multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals, setting students up for success in sixth grade where their study of fraction division culminates. Fifth grade concludes with introducing students to two big ideas that will be used throughout middle school and beyond volume and the coordinate plane.
Wit & Wisdom is a K–8 English language arts curriculum that brings the rich content everyone loves into your child's classroom. We believe that classrooms are places where students and teachers encounter wit, wisdom, wonder, rigor, and knowledge and that literature, history, art, and science all have a place in ELA instruction. Wit & Wisdom helps your students meet the expectations of the new standards while celebrating the joy of reading and writing.
Wit & Wisdom prepares students to succeed in English language arts and beyond. If you would like to learn more, please go to greatminds.org.
Physical Sciences: Students develop an understanding that changes can occur to matter/objects on Earth or in space, but both energy and matter follow the pattern of being conserved during those changes.
Earth and Space Sciences: Students develop an understanding of how forces (gravity) in space cause observable patterns due to the position of the Earth, Sun, Moon, and stars.
Life Sciences: Students develop an understanding of the flow of energy in a system beginning with the Sun to and among organisms. They also understand that plants and animals (including humans) have specialized internal and external structures, and can respond to stimuli to increase survival.
Social studies educators foster critical thinking and equip students to read critically, analyze information, and communicate their findings effectively to take informed action in their communities and our democracy.
This will be accomplished using the PVSchools Governing Board-approved curriculum, McGraw Hill.
Fifth-grade students study the American Revolution-Industrial Age (1763-1900s).
Wit & Wisdom, our new ELA adoption, integrates the writing process throughout the literature studies. Fifth grade focuses on paragraph structure and grammar through personal narratives and expository writing. We also use Layers of Language (LOL). This program introduces students to Greek and Latin word parts.
