Course Descriptions

AP® Music Theory 1-2

This year long course is designed to prepare students for the AP® Music Theory exam as well as college level music theory courses. Students will work intensively to develop competency in music reading, analysis, and listening skills.

Prerequisite: Ability to read music and knowledge of basic musical elements. Should have experience in playing an instrument or singing.

Survey of Popular Music

This course explores the history of rock and other popular music styles from the early 1900's to present time. Prominent players and groups from a variety of genres will be covered, as well as sociological, economic and cultural factors that shaped the many styles of popular music. Extensive listening and demonstrations/performances of musicians will help enhance the learning experience. Emphasis is on the development of tools for critical thinking and intelligent listening.

The Rise of Electronic Music

This course explores the history of electronic music from its primitive beginning in the 1800's to present time. Influential inventors, musicians, and music from the electronic music genre will be covered, as well as sociological, economic and cultural factors that shaped the used of electronic music. Listening assignments, multimedia demonstrations/performances of musicians and discussion forums will help enhance the learning experience. Emphasis is on the development of tools for critical thinking and intelligent listening.

Introduction to Art 1

This course is a basic introductory art course that covers the principals of arts and design. Students will explore these principals through creating projects, viewing examples of these principles from various artists, and learning the terms which make up the language of art.

Introduction to Music Technology 1

This course explores the latest innovations and advances in the field of music technology as students develop an understanding of how technology is used in creating and performing music. Topics will include, but not be limited to: digital sampling, sequencing, looping, and computer generated composition. Students will use technology to compose, edit, arrange, and record their own music.

Students will use technology to compose, edit, arrange, and record their own music.
