Credit Recovery Courses are designed for students who have failed required classes and need to make up credits for graduation for which students receive either a "Credit" or "No credit" (F). Students review principles of grammar in application to writing skills, conduct short story and expository analysis, and complete an extensive teacher-guided unit that synthesizes and applies principles of the documented argument essay writing process. Required assignments in speaking/listening and viewing/presenting are included. Peer interaction is achieved through participation in open forum discussions on relevant course topics. English 4 - This course is the second semester of 10th grade English/Language Arts. Students will review identification of word stems and vocabulary; will study and analyze a powerful memoir, applying skills of text comparison, literary device analysis, and writing/reflection on this work of non-fiction which will also serve as the basis for a series of close reading exercises and analysis. Students will complete an extensive teacher-guided unit that synthesizes and applies principles of the personal narrative essay writing process. Honors English 1 - 2
Honors English 1 and Honors English 2 courses are designed to exceed the district and state curriculum requirements as well as challenge the advanced student. In reading, students analyze short stories, novels, and classical literature. Outside reading and advanced vocabulary study are also required. In writing, students review the basic structure of the essay and improve their descriptive, narrative, expository, and functional writing. Also included in the course are required assignments in speaking/listening and viewing/presenting.

Honors English 3 - 4
Honors English 3 and Honors English 4 courses build upon those skills taught in Honors English 1-2 and are designed to exceed the district and state curriculum requirements, as well as challenge the advanced student. In reading, students focus on in-depth study of thought-provoking fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry. Outside reading and vocabulary study are also required. Students concentrate on multi-paragraph essays with an emphasis on building a solid argument. Also included in the course are required assignments in speaking/listening and viewing/presenting.

AP English 5 - 6
These courses build upon those skills taught in Honors English 3-4 and are designed to exceed the district and state curriculum requirements and challenge the advanced student. The curriculum is based on the College Board's recommendation for AP English Language and Composition courses. Students read, interpret, analyze and evaluate non-fiction works as well as American literature from Puritan times through the 21st century. In addition to literary analysis, students practice rhetorical analysis, argument, and synthesis essays in preparation for the Advanced Placement Language and Composition Exam. Students enrolled in this class are expected to take the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Exam. Each college/university has its own policy on eligibility for college credit based on the AP exam score, so students need to research universities that interest them to determine which score is required and which type of English credits will be awarded.

AP English 7 - 8
This course is designed to challenge the advanced student and exceed the district and state curriculum requirements. Students
read works of recognized literary merit and their critical reviews, analyze forms and content, and write reactions and criticisms in
preparation for the Advanced Placement exam given during the spring semester. The course also has advanced vocabulary study
and a research project. Also included in the course are required assignments in speaking/listening and viewing/presenting. Students enrolled in this class are expected to take the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Exam. Exam scores, and each
college/university, will determine eligibility for college credit.

English 101 - 102
This is a community college course that also fulfills the Senior English High School requirement for graduation. It offers instruction in the necessary components for college composition. The student will learn and review the basic components of writing college level essays. In addition, the student will focus on the appropriate skills needed for critical reading and thinking.
This course is a dual enrollment course. This means that students will be enrolled in Community College English 101 or 102 through pvONLINE and will be expected to enroll through Rio Salado Community College. Registration information for Rio Salado Community College will be provided to you upon registration through pvONLINE. It is the student’s responsibility to meet all of the registration and payment deadlines for Rio Salado in order to receive college credit. The Paradise Valley Unified School District and pvONLINE are not responsible for confirming registration and payment with Rio Salado Community College.
