We Put the FUN in Phonics
This will be our first year launching Wilson FUNdations for 2nd grade at PS108Q. If your child attended PS108Q last year, they should be familiar with it. Fundations is a phonics-based program, which focus on multi-sensory instruction (FUN) to increase literacy skills.
It's all About Balance in Literacy
In 2nd Grade, we use rich, culturally-responsive literature to teach students reading skills necessary to become successful, lifelong readers. Our main focus will be on the following:
September-October: Story Elements
November-December: Character Traits/Character Analysis
January-February: Nonfiction Text Features
March: Main Idea
April-May: Fables and Central Message
June: Author's Purpose/ Review of Skills
Guiding Our Little Readers
Students are broken up into groups by their instructional reading level. During Guided Reading, students will learn a new strategy and skill to become a better reader. Then, they will practice the strategy and skill on their own.
Writing Workshop
During Writing Workshop the teacher will model a writing skill. Then, students will practice the skill with their own writing, while the teacher works with a small group of students. Topics the children will be writing about this year are:
Personal Narrative: A real-life example of kindness
Informational Writing: Special Holiday
Biography: An Important Actor or Musician
Fractured Fairytales: Based off of The Three Little Pigs
Poetry: Diamantes, Color Poems, I like..., Shape Poems
Self-Reflection: How have I grown as a writer
GO Math, GO!
