Welcome
The Department of Physics was established in September, 1961 to share the honour among a few other post-graduate departments started in the initial phase of The University of Burdwan. The department was started with the objective to meet the academic interest and to fulfill the gradual increasing demand of a large section of students in rural Bengal for pursuing higher education in the Post Graduate level.
After a span of more than fifty years of establishment, the members of the department through their consistent effort have developed it as a premier institution of the country for teaching and research in the field of applied and theoretical Physics.
MISSION: for which the department stands
VISION
To inculcate scientific culture among the backward and under privileged boys and girls of rural Bengal
To enhance and consolidate the achievement of the department in the fields of condensed matter physics including LASER;
To acquire the recognition as an advanced centre of training and research in the field of theoretical physical sciences like astrophysics and cosmology, complex dynamical systems, nonlinear optics, high energy physics, spectroscopy, etc.
To provide state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities to the experimental researchers in the field of material science, condensed matter physics, microwaves and lasers, photonics, GNSS etc. in this part of the country;
To produce post-graduate and doctoral students in the field of physical science capable of meeting the challenges of twenty first century;
Intensive involvement of the faculty members in Research to be measured in terms of publications of at least two papers per year by an individual member on peer reviewed journals of concerned field
Establishment of schools of advanced study in the fields of Nano-science and technology, Astrophysics and Cosmology, Nonlinear sciences like nonlinear optics, complex dynamical systems of electronics, biology, ecology, etc.;
Strengthening the available infrastructure and manpower of the Department in fields of RF and Microwave Electronics, LASER, GNSS and Navigational Electronics, Photonics for establishment of a school of applied Electronics
