Last Thursday May 12, 2016 we continued our first discussion on Connectomics with a discussion on Neural Dynamics and the implications of connectomics led by Eve Marder of Brandeis University. The event started off with a seminar by Dr. Marder entitled: "Maintaining 'good enough' motor performance with highly variable circuit components". Dr. Marder discussed recent work from her laboratory demonstrating both the variability and compensatory nature of biological circuits. After the seminar, discussion continued over dinner. On the menu: ‘Gnocchi Sorrentino’, ‘Penne al salmone" and ‘Fettucini Cacio e Pepe’ (Ilaria/Alberto pasta chefs) ‘Tangerine Jungle Salad’ (Eduardo salad chef) ‘Banana Cream Pie’ and ‘Chocolate Pudding Icebox Cake' (Amir and Kevin pastry Chefs)
with Costa acting as our sommelier and carefully select matching wines for the pasta.
We had a great discussion which ranged from the history of connectomics and circuit mapping in model organisms to the purpose of a model and the utility of computational modeling and understanding invertebrate network dynamics in ultimately understanding how larger networks like the brain may function. The conclusion of the discussion was that the future of neuroscience lies in understanding the simultaneous activity of hundreds of thousands of neurons in coordinating behavior.
We look forward to continuing the discussion at the next pasta night!
Thanks to our chefs and everyone who helped clean up and organize for the night!
