MRS. CHRISTOFORETTI'S SMARTEST ARTIST
*If you click on your school, a step by step packet will walk you through how to upload your art.
Students will have directed art instructions once a week for 30 minutes. There will be many projects experienced during the school year. I will post a brief overview of what your child will be learning about in our class. Occasionally some projects may change or new ones may be added due to class cancellations or a sudden burst of inspiration- no project is set in stone!
The core concepts and skills
Students will work with a variety of materials including markers, crayons, paint, clay, and technology. We will look at the role of art in society, recognizing art as a form of communication and expression and identifying elements of art such as line, shape, color, texture, and space. Art history instruction is also a component of the curriculum. Throughout the entire experience, we will explore age-appropriate methods of becoming an artist. All projects students are to use their imagination. I believe in the power of integrating art lessons with content in the classroom. This is highly beneficial for those students who are visual-spatial and bodily-kinesthetic learners. It also allows students to bring the knowledge they have learned into the art room demonstrating understanding or solidifying abstract concepts in the classroom into practical use.
What you can do at home (EVERYONE IS AN ARTIST)
Many people ask what they can do at home to help support the child to create. Drawing, sculpting with clay, building with Lego or other toys, creating art on the computer, taking photographs- all these help support the elements of the art curriculum. Coloring with your child is invaluable- that simple practice of craftsmanship of staying in the lines helps so much with hand-eye coronation. Practicing to cut will also help! Have your students cut coupons! Exposing children to art is also valuable.
I do not base assessment on a child’s ability to draw or paint. Ability is a great thing to have and will be nurtured but raw talent alone isn’t what art is entirely about. I want each and every one of my students to enjoy the time they spend in the art room regardless of their abilities.
The Art grade is broken up into three separate categories:
craftsmanship and skill
creativity and originality
behavior and effort
*** I focus more on the process of the work than the product of the work. If you participate and try you will do ARTsome!
