Social and Emotional Learning at Pennridge School District
"Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, 2015)." These competencies have been identified by leaders in child development, education, and the business world as critical skills for the success of students. To support this, the district has identified ten themes to develop the competencies of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making--those ten themes form the acronym TAKES PRIDE. These themes have been used to shape social and emotional learning for all students in Pennridge.

The goal of the Pennridge School District K-5 Social and Emotional Learning or SEL Curriculum is to develop competence in the use of SEL skills and reinforce social and emotional learning in our students by providing instruction in and opportunities to practice, apply, and be recognized for using SEL skills in the context of a safe and supportive community learning environment.
