¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos al mundo español! My name is Tina Welborn and I teach Spanish. I grew up across the bridge in good ol' L.A. (Leland Area). This was before the Walmart was built and if we needed to do/buy something, we had to go to "town." I always knew I would be a teacher when I graduated. I had so many amazing teachers and I wanted to be able to give back and hopefully become a positive influence for future generations. I think my passion for Spanish began at an early age when I accompanied my mom and several members of our church on a mission trip to Mexico. Even at a young age, I remember thinking, "If only I could speak Spanish...imagine the places I could go!" I am so grateful and humbled to have had a childhood where I was able to go on many mission/service trips.
While attending UNCW, I had the unbelievable opportunity to study abroad in Santander, Spain. For a girl who never went too far from home, this was an exciting, yet terrifying undertaking. It was so worth it!! I graduated in 2004 and spent my first year teaching Spanish 1 and 2 at Clinton High School. I loved Clinton but wanted a job closer to home. I began teaching at New Hanover High in the Fall of 2005 and remained there for eleven years. In the Spring of 2008, I received my Masters Degree from UNCW in Instructional Design. I learned so much about myself and teaching style while completing this challenging program. Fast forward to the Spring of 2014 when my family and I decided to put roots down in Pender County. It was the best decision we ever made! We love where we live! This is my seventh year at Pender High and I am SUPER excited to see the great things in store for my classroom!
Outside of teaching, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE spending time with my husband and two amazing kids, Maddie (15) and Cash (13). We love camping, going to the mountains, fishing, and 4-wheeling at the beach.
Classroom Philosophy
Learning another language is a daunting task for most. The biggest hurdle the average person must overcome is their fear of making mistakes while speaking/listening in the target language. Therefore, I have tried to create an environment within my room that is full of encouragement and praise. My hope is that my students will not be afraid to use Spanish outside our classroom walls.
