Scout Sunday.
A time to give back to the people who have so generously hosted Troup 14 for the past 99 years, coming up on the 100th year soon. I had only joined the troop a few months ago and Scout Sunday was something I had never heard of at the time. There were several roles for the scouts to play to make the service run smoothly. There were three roles to choose from, acolyte, usher, and greeter. Acolytes were people who lit candles, the other two are self-explanatory. I was a greeter and an usher.
When I arrived, I didn't have a neckerchief, but one of the older scouts, LJ helped me with that. For around forty-five minutes, I opened a door for people and gave them a general greeting. Before the ushers were queued, we were given a short briefing, but the plan changed quickly. When the Troop got into the sanctuary, we were directed to a set of pews reserved for us. Before the initial start, I didn't know at the time, but it was LJ's birthday. We sang happy birthday and thoroughly embarrassed him.
We all sang the hymns and listened to the pastor's sermon. When it was time, my fellow ushers and I stood up, walked to the front, took the offering plates and made our way down through the rows of people to collect the offering. When we got back, all the offering was put onto one plate. We sang a few more hymns, and ended with a brief prayer.
After the service, the Girl Scouts, the whole Boy Scout Troop was called to the front, including the Webelos and all the leaders present. After the picture, we all said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. My first ever Scout Sunday I enjoyed it a lot. I hope I can participate in Scout Sunday next year.
