What Does a School Counselor Do?

    • Individual student academic planning and goal setting

    • Short-term counseling to students

    • Referrals for long-term support

    • Class scheduling

    • 504 coordination

    • Collaboration with families/ teachers/administrators/ school staff/ community members for student success

    • Data analysis to identify student issues, needs and challenges

    • College and career readiness

    • Support the college application process

    • Letters of recommendation for college, trade schools, private schools, job placements, etc.

    • Standardized Testing - SATs, PSATs, AP, MCAS

    • Baypath & private school application support

    • Advocacy for students at individual education plan meetings and other student-focused meetings

    • Act as a systems change agent to improve equity and access, achievement and opportunities for all students

    • Develop and implement school counseling curriculum and lesson planning

    • Maintains Instagram page @oxford_school_counseling

    • Updates school counseling department website

    • Maintains counseling office and bulletin boards

What Does a School Adjustment Counselor Do?

    • Address mental health needs of students in school

    • Individual/group psychotherapy

    • Crisis Intervention/referral

    • Coordinate work-study placements and credits

    • Collaborate with out-of-school practitioners to provide support to students

    • Community liaison for referral and data-base collection

    • Diagnose, evaluate, recommend interventions for student adjustment

    • Meet individually with at-risk students

    • Coordinate groups for at-risk students

    • Supporting students with IEP/504 plans as assigned

    • Compile, summarize and submit data for program evaluation

Responsibilities of all School Counselors/SACs/Social Workers:

    • Address mental health needs of students in school

    • Referrals for short/long-term support/follow up

    • Collaborate with out-of-school practitioners to provide support to students

    • Collaborate with families/ teachers/administrators/ school staff/ community members for student success

    • Ensure and support equal educational opportunity for all students at all times

    • Conflict resolution services

    • Provide interventions when situations arise that affect the social/emotional, academic, and/or personal development of student(s)

    • Safeguard student’s right to privacy within framework of laws and policies

    • Data analysis to identify student issues, needs and challenges

What Does My Counseling Secretary Do?

    • Coordinate work permit applications

    • Process transcript requests

    • Greets office visitors and triages student needs

    • Updates OXPS school counseling website

    • Payment collection for standardized testing

    • Coordinate and communicate scholarship opportunities for seniors

    • Maintains counseling office and bulletin boards
