U.S. Civics Exam

Project-Based Assessment and Citizenship Test for Social Studies

Project-Based Assessment Required for Social Studies

Per state law (T.C.A. § 49-6-1028), since the 2012-13 school year, all districts must ensure that a project-based civics assessment is given at least once in grades 4–8 and once in grades 9–12. The project-based civics assessments are developed by the district to ensure students are being taught the learning objectives contained within the social studies curriculum as well as to demonstrate understanding of civics.

Citizenship Test Beginning in 2016-17

Per state law (T.C.A. § 49-6-408), beginning in the 2016-17 school year, graduating seniors are required to pass a United States civics test. The test must be composed of 25 to 50 questions taken from the civics test administered by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. All students within each district must pass this test with at least 70 percent accuracy; however, students are allowed to take the test as many times as necessary to pass. It will be the responsibility of the school district to prepare and score the test. All districts who have 100 percent of their students pass will be honored on the department's website as a civics all-star district for that school year.
