Course Information

Justification:

Recent development of IT (information technology) causes great impact in today's educational arena. Teachers, as proficient IT users, are expected to be able to discern and integrate IT appropriately and effectively in teaching and learning. This course aims to enable participants to be an apt and competent integrator of IT in teaching and learning (KNOWLEDGE). Students will also understand the capabilities of computer technology in instruction (PRACTICE), as well as current and evolving developments within their own areas of interest. This course is conceptually and explicitly tied to the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards in technology that have been adopted by National Council for Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE) for all teachers. These standards provide a clear view of the important processes and uses of technology in educational settings (AUTHENTIC LEARNING).

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    • Explore and retrieve information within their own areas from a variety of resources, including the Internet.
    • Review, analyze, and organize a variety of perspectives on resources within their own areas.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of equity, ethics, and legal issues concerning use of educational resources and technologies.
    • Use productivity tools that include word processing, multimedia presentation, and Web editing software to perform professional and educationally oriented tasks.
    • Apply productivity tools and educational resources for creating inquiry-based learning projects.
    • Demonstrate an ability to publish their projects online.
    • Demonstrate awareness of principles, directions, and methods to design and develop their electronic teaching portfolios.

Requirements:

  • Regular class attendance (minus 1 point for each absence, or 0.5 hrs late).
  • Hands-on practices.
  • Present assignment on time (1 point will be deducted for every day [not class day] an assignment is late).
  • Do major assignments/ projects.
  • You will need one USB flash drive for this class. You should always carry them with you.

Grading:

20 pts Attendance and Participation

30 pts Individual Assignments (15 pts ea.)

15 pts Individual or Group Web Project

20 pts Group Presentation Project

15 pts Course Portfolio Project
