Since we're a rural school district we understand that if your children are not participating in Vacation Bible School or Summer School, it may not be practical to come in daily for meals. Centralia's information is below. I hope this information is helpful!

Free School Meals 22-23

Onalaska School District's application for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) was approved. That means All students will have access to school meals free of charge. Free school meals will start with the 22-23 school year and run through June 30th, 2026. This is great news for Onalaska Families! Especially with the increased food and fuel prices.

CEP Benefits our Students and Families by ensuring all children have equal access to nutritious meals. It eliminates the meal costs for our families and reduces the stigma around school meals.  School meals improve student attendance and improve test scores. They also reduce disciplinary referrals across all grade levels.

Positive Changes

Our food distributor changed and they replaced our jam with a jelly that had the first ingredient of high fructose corn syrup and the second ingredient was juice. We replaced it with this great freezer jam that uses real sugar and fruit. The flavor is so much better and it's a healthier product.

More and more studies are coming out about how bad vegetable oils are for our bodies. Olive oil on the other hand is a very healthy oil. As soon as we are out of our current supply of vegetable oil we will be making the switch to 100% olive oil.

Olive oil is rich in antioxidants, has strong anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

The antioxidants in olive oil have anti-cancer properties (they fight free radicals) and may prevent other chronic diseases.

Inflammation in the body can increase the risk of cancer, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's, and heart disease. Olive oil can reduce inflammation with the antioxidants that it contains.

The antibacterial properties of olive oil can help prevent stomach ulcers & stomach cancers.

Other healthy oils to use are Coconut and Avocado oil.

Even though the costs of these products are quite a bit more (over 2 1/2 times and over 2 times respectively) we believe better foods equal better health. We're striving to provide the healthiest meals that our kids will eat

Students Can “Score Big” with School Breakfast

National School Breakfast Week Campaign Encourages Students to Try School Breakfast

To encourage more families to take advantage of the healthy choices available with school breakfast, Onalaska School District will celebrate National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) during March 8-12, 2021.

Busy weekday mornings make it a challenge for many families to find time for a healthy breakfast. Fortunately, Onalaska schools offer nutritious school breakfasts, complete with fruit and low-fat milk, to ensure students are fueled for learning every school day. School Breakfast is served in the classrooms every school day for Pre K – 5th grades and is available in the Cafeteria, Commons & High School Library Buildings for Middle & High school students. This school year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is allowing all children to receive school breakfast and lunch for free, without an application, so it’s a great time for families to give school breakfast a try.

The NSBW campaign theme, “Score Big with School Breakfast,” reminds the entire school community that school breakfast provides a healthy and energizing start to the day for students. Studies show that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to:

·        Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math

·        Score higher on standardized tests

·        Have better concentration and memory

·        Be more alert

·        Maintain a healthy weight

A healthy breakfast at the start of the day is a great way to ensure students get the best education they can.

And children who eat school breakfast are more likely to get the vitamins, minerals & fiber they need to grow & be healthy.

The “Score Big with School Breakfast” campaign is made possible by the School Nutrition Association and Kellogg’s®.

Parents and students can follow the fun on Facebook.com/TrayTalk using the hashtag #NSBW21.

About National School Breakfast Week

National School Breakfast Week was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the School Breakfast Program, a federally assisted meal program operating in public and non-profit private schools and residential child care institutions since 1975.

About Us

The Onalaska School Food Service is operated by the school district, for the children, under a federal grant. The district operates its own food service to provide great meals to kids in a fiscally responsible way. This allows the cooks to make a lot of the food from scratch. Giving them more control over the sodium, fat, and fiber contents of each meal. Some of the items made from scratch are Pizza, sloppy joes, spaghetti, all soups, baked beans, refried beans, Mexican black beans, rolls, cookies, teriyaki and, General Tso chicken, logger nachos (meat & cheese sauce), BBQ Chicken, quesadillas and chef salads. We offer vegetables and a variety of fruits every day. Whole grain products are available every day. All of the meals are planned to meet the RDAs for the students we feed.

If you have any questions or comments about our food program, please contact me at jcarlson@onysd.wednet.edu
