General Testing Information

Reading tests are given weekly and can include all or some of the following:  story vocabulary (past & present), phonics vowels sounds that have been worked on (spelling tests practice current vowel sound), comprehension of the story being read in class, a cold-read story (that is, reading and answering questions about a current level story that has not been read in class prior), or a skill covered. Not every test is given every week. Each week at home, please review the story vocabulary, the spelling words, and discussion of the story.  As grammar is integrated into the reading program, questions on current class lessons may also be included in the weekly tests.

The Spelling test paper has 2 sides.  You will notice a spelling grade on each side and a sentence score on each side.  There were 3 sentences on each side.  Each sentence was checked for 5 things when scoring - Correct capital letters, appropriate spacing between words, correct spelling, having all of the words in the sentence, and the correct end mark.

Math tests are given at the end of each chapter.  Progress Check Assessments take place periodically through the chapter.  Simple Solution Quizzes are given after every 10 lessons.

Religion tests are given at the end of each chapter.

When tests are sent home in the Yellow Test Folder, please review the tests with your child.  Sign the tests and return them in the Test Folder the following day.  PLEASE DO NOT WRITE NOTES/QUESTIONS on the test, I will not see them right away to respond to you.  I file when I have the opportunity.

First Grade receives letter grades based on the following percentages:

O (Outstanding) = 98-100

VG (Very Good) = 92-97

G (Good) = 85-91

S (Satisfactory) = 76-84

I (Improvement Needed) = 70-75

U (Unsatisfactory) = 0-69

Please keep in mind that your child may need time to adjust to the various testing formats, listening and following directions, and getting in the habit of checking his/her work.
