Merivale High School
ENG 2DE - Course Description
(Pre-IB Enriched Grade Ten Academic English)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This enriched preparatory course for students in the International Baccalaureate Program extends the range of analytic, reading, writing, oral communication, and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school academic programs, the IB Program, and their daily lives. Students will study and interpret challenging texts from contemporary and historical periods, including novels, plays, poems, and short prose pieces, and they will also analyze and create effective media works. An important focus will be the thoughtful use of spoken and written language. The main features that distinguish this course from the regular Grade Ten Academic program, is the inclusion of: a wider range of literary works, some of which are studied in greater depth; an independent study reading program designed to train students to undertake close textual reading and analysis on their own; the study of a second Shakespearean play; and instruction in the art of oral and written literary commentaries.
