LDH offers one of the best communications programs in Ontario.

Skills Ontario Competition

The Skills Ontario Competition is Canada's largest skilled trade and technology competition that showcases the talented youth of our province. Over 20,000 spectators converge on this three-day event to watch over 2000 of the brightest young people of this province compete in one of the over 67 skills contests offered. On competition day, our team was up for a 5 am breakfast and on the bus at 6 am. The competition then ran 7.5hrs in front of large noisy crowds in the Toronto Congress Centre.

In May 2019, LDH earned Silver medals both Graphic Design Studio and 2D Animation. Congratulations to Hannah Burgstaller, Theo Coombes and Will Klassen. LDH also represented the OCDSB in Graphics Presentation.

On May 7-9, 2018, LDH had qualified to represent our region in Photography, Graphic Design and Studio Production. In Graphic Design ‐ Presentation, Hannah Burgstaller finished 14th out of 23 school boards. In Photography, Sarah Mcintyre earned a 10th out of 41 competitors. Wing Yan Chan finished an amazing 4th out of 26 Graphic Design ‐ Studio Production.

In 2017, Parnika Rajaghatta and Hailey Frizell finished second in the province to the eventual national champions in TV Video competition and Kim Le finished an First in Graphic Design ‐ Studio Production and represented Ontario at the Skills Canada competition in Winnipeg. This was the first time that any OCDSB school finished First and Second in any technology sector.

Exploring Communications Technology

Grade 9 TGJ1O

This exploratory course introduces students to concepts and skills in communications technology, which encompasses television/video and movie production, audio production, print and graphic communications, photography, and animation. Students will work both independently and as part of a production team to design and produce media products in a project-driven environment. Practical projects may include manipulating photos, logo design, poster design, clothing, video, animation, and photography. Students will learn the basic in the Adobe Creative Cloud - Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate, Premiere Pro and be exposed to other software in the Adobe suite. Students will develop an awareness of related environmental and societal issues, and will begin to explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the field.

Communications Technology - GRAPHIC DESIGN

Grade 10 TGJ2OG

This course introduces students to communications technology from a media perspective. Students will work in the areas of print and graphic communications. Students will work both independently and as part of a production team to design and produce media products in a project-driven environment. Practical projects may include the manipulating photos, logo design, poster design, clothing, the making of signs.... Students will become proficient in the Adobe Creative Cloud - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and be exposed to other software in the Adobe suite. Students will also develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to communications technology and will explore secondary and postsecondary education and training pathways and career opportunities in the various communications technology fields.

Communications Technology - VIDEO and ANIMATION,

This course introduces students to communications technology from a media perspective. Students will work both independently and as part of a production team to design and produce media products in a project-driven environment. Students will work in the areas of TV/video and movie production, audio production and animation. Student projects may include computer-based activities such as creating videos, working with audio, cartooning, developing animations and video effects. Students will become proficient in the Adobe Creative Cloud - Premiere Pro, After Effects, Animate and be exposed to other software in the Adobe suite. Students will also develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to communications technology and will explore secondary and postsecondary education and training pathways and career opportunities in the various communications technology fields.

Communications Technology - PHOTOGRAPHY,

Grade 11 University/College Preparation TGP3M

This course introduces students to communications technology from a media perspective. Students will work both independently and as part of a production team to design and produce media products in a project-driven environment. Students will work in the areas of Photography, Digital Imaging and Project Management. Student projects may include computer-based activities such as editing and manipulating photos, creating posters, enhancing and editing photos and photo library organization. Students will learn how to operate and control photography equipment including DSLR Cameras and lighting equipment. Students will be encouraged to develop their creative skills and contribute to their photography portfolio. Students will become proficient in the Adobe Creative Cloud - specifically Photoshop and Lightroom and be exposed to other software in the Adobe suite. Students will also develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to communications technology and will explore secondary and postsecondary education and training pathways and career opportunities in the various communications technology fields.


Communications Technology - GRAPHICS or VIDEO or ANIMATION,

Grade 12 University/College Preparation TGJ4M

This course enables students to further develop media knowledge and skills in a specific area of Communication Technology. Students may work in the areas of TV, video, and movie production; or print and graphic communications; or animation. Students will become advanced users of the Adobe Creative Suite and create projects for clients, contest and portfolios. Students will also expand their awareness of environmental and societal issues related to communications technology and will investigate career opportunities and challenges in a rapidly changing technological environment. Prerequisite: Communications Technology, Grade 10 or 11, University/College Preparation
