PAD2O CANOE TRIP INFO

Dear Parent or Guardian,

The Outdoor Education classes will be going to Grand Lake/Barron Canyon, in Algonquin Park, for their canoe trips. The purpose of the trips is to learn paddling skills, portaging skills as well as leave no-trace backcountry camping skills. The trip dates are as follows:

PAD2O-01 (Monday Class) Friday September 27th to Sunday September 29th

PAD2O-05 (Tuesday Class) Sunday September 29th to Tuesday October 1st

PAD2O-06 (Thursday Class) Tuesday October 1st to Thursday October 3rd

***Please make sure that your son or daughter is at school for 7:30 am for an 8:00 am departure.***

***Remember to make sure that your child has their health card with them.***

It is my intention, and the goal of the Outdoor Education program, to make this trip a rewarding and pleasurable experience for all class members, regardless of initial ability. The trip will strive to challenge everyone, while providing a lasting, positive experience for each student, thus encouraging students to continue in outdoor pursuits such as canoeing. The cost of the trip (transportation, park fees & canoe rental) is covered through the Outdoor Education budget. However, food (meals and snacks) is the responsibility of the students. The students will be divided into groups of 3-4 to come up with meal plans and will be responsible for buying, packing and cooking their own food for the trip.

To be prepared for the Outdoor Education course, it is essential that your son or daughter has appropriate gear. I have attached a basic gear list that will apply to most of the activities we do. The school is able to supply the technical gear (tents, pots, stoves, backpacks, food barrels) if your son or daughter doesn’t have access to their own, but students must take responsibility for having suitable clothing and personal gear. Suitable gear means being able to cope with the variety of weather conditions we may get – we have had sun and warmth on past canoe trips but we have also experienced pounding rain, wind and even snow. Please ensure that your son or daughter is prepared for all conditions possible – it is not only their enjoyment of the experience at stake, but also their safety, if they don’t come with appropriate gear.

Living in Ottawa, we are lucky to have several different retailers who specialize in outdoor gear and clothing – Bushtukah, MEC, Decathlon, Trailhead and SAIL are your best options. Bushtukah in particular has offered a discount of 10% off regular price to Lisgar Outdoor Ed students. To qualify for this discount you must present your student ID at the cash register and mention the discount.

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Darius Arjang
