Ao-Yu Spits Algae

Ao-Yu is a kind of fish with the head of dragon, which is called Ao-Loong as well. Winning the first prize in the highest imperial examination was the champion. People described those champions as Ao to emerge first in exams.

There’s a legend about Big Splash since ancient times. Leaping the Longmen

alls, carps will evolve Ao and then become dragons if they succeed. It represents to enter a new life and has a symbol of the beginning of brilliant.

Because Ao-Yu likes to swallow fire and spit water, it has the effect of fire and praying for rain. It is often used as decorative materials in traditional wooden buildings. It’s one of the common themes for auspicious temple decoration, which symbolizes to protect temples from fire disaster for blessings. Thus, we can often see ceramic works with “Ao-Yu Spits Algae” on the rooftop of temples.
