This year we will study American literature and consider how our literature provides an insight into what it means to be American -- our understanding of who we were, who we are and who we want to be. Our major readings will be:
The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne
Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer (Publisher: Anchor); selections from essays by Thoreau and Emerson
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry
The Nickel Boys, Colson Whitehead
Lit circles/book club selections include The Catcher in the Rye, The Things They Carried
Bolded titles are ones you may wish to purchase so you can annotate. If you prefer to annotate with sticky notes, you can use a school copy and bring your own post-its. Do not use super sticky post-its!
We will dedicate time to independent reading, as well as reading and discussion of current event articles.
