Practicing

Students are expected to practice, at minimum, 100 minutes per week.

This may seem difficult, but here are some ideas to help your child practice:

  1. Schedule practice time on the calendar.
  2. 15 minutes before a TV show so they're done when it starts.
  3. 15 minutes before or after dinner.
  4. For those of you old enough to remember the game show "Name That Tune," have your student play the first number of notes and see if you can guess what they're playing. They can continue playing if you guess correctly.
  5. Give them 10 minutes to practice, then have your child perform for you. A lot of praise about their playing will make this a fun activity for them!
  6. Set an alarm clock for 15 minutes.
  7. Ask them what songs they’re playing and have them tell you about them. Often they are then excited to play them for you.
  8. Ask them what parts are difficult in their songs. Then have them practice that part for a few minutes and then play it for you to hear the improvement.
  9. Listen to recordings online (recordings are often linked on our Google Classroom). This will often get them more excited to play the songs.

Students are usually more excited to play their instruments and will practice more if their parents find some way to be involved in practice time.
