Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics: Summer Ventures is a free, state-funded program for academically talented students who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics. ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME WITH TEXTILES THIS SUMMER
Now is the time for your students to consider applying for NC State’s College of Textiles pre-college programs: Summer Textile Exploration Program (STEP) and Polymer Camp. Both programs provide great opportunities for students interested in pursuing one of our five majors:

STEP offers students a one-week residential experience during which they actively participate in a project group based on the degree program of their choice. Students also will learn about applying to NC State, hear about our Centennial Scholarships, visit local textile companies, and take part in exciting activities around campus while living in a residence hall with other STEP participants. This program is open to all rising high school seniors and applications are now being accepted for STEP. Cost is $200. Financial assistance may be available.
Polymer Camp, a two-day workshop to be held July 28 and 29 at the College, is designed for high school students interested in physical sciences, engineering and NC State. Attendees will engage in hands-on laboratories and interactive sessions; learn about ourCentennial Scholarships and the degree programs in the department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science; hear about the admissions process; and screen print their own NC State t-shirts. This program is open to all high school students, but preference is given to rising juniors and seniors. Applications are now being accepted for Polymer Camp. Cost is $45. Financial assistance may be available.

The Young Writers Workshop (YWW) is an annual five-day camp that brings together up to 45 high school students to study the craft of writing on the UNC Wilmington campus. Oceans of Change (Age 15-17)- Join MarineQuest as we explore the science behind the headlines of the controversial topic: Climate Change. Investigate how scientists collect data on climate conditions and research data from the past contained in (ice) cores and fossils. Participate in a research cruise to checkout an active buoy and discuss current methods in ocean monitoring. Discover how climate change is influencing our coastline and the key species that migrate along it, including sea turtles and whales. Explore some of the more promising initiatives that scientists are employing to try to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Work in service learning teams to create public service announcements to share with the community on relevant topics such as sea level rise, ocean temperature fluctuations, ocean acidification, dead zones, food chains, or coral bleaching. Ocean CHEMystery (Age 15-17) -Prerequisite: must have completed at least one basic chemistry class.
Discover the underlying chemical basis for some of the ocean's most mysterious environmental challenges. Why do tuna contain mercury? Why do whales have blisters? Why are corals dissolving? Experiment with analytical techniques that forensic chemists use to solve these kinds of mysteries. Learn how chemicals cycle through our atmosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere to impact life in the ocean. Understand the importance of ocean chemistry for all biological life forms. Investigate the chemical basis for different types of marine pollution. When are applications due?
There is no deadline for our applications. Applications are accepted for each course until that course is full at which time we begin a waitlist.
Requirements?
Beyond specific course requirements, we do not have a specific GPA requirement. The committee that reviews the applications looks at a number of factors to ensure they will be able to succeed in the rigorous course they are applying for.
Who can apply?
Any rising 7th through 12th grader with an excellent academic record and a keen interest in science, technology, engineering or mathematics is encouraged to apply. Our alum join us from around the world and students outside North Carolina are encouraged to apply.
Is there financial aid?
Students whose families are eligible for the Food Assistance Program, and whom live in Durham, Chapel Hill, Orange, Chatham or Wake counties may apply for financial aid for our summer programs. We will award aid to cover the full amount of tuition to at least nine eligible students in 2017. To apply for aid, please fill out the same application and indicate that you qualify.
