WELCOME TO FOURTH GRADE!
Attendance:
The first bell rings at 7:35 and school officially starts at 7:40. Your child needs to be in the classroom by that time. If your child is late, you must check him/her in at the office.
If your child is absent, please send a note when they return, explaining the reason for the absence in order to keep records accurate. Please note that family trips/vacations are not considered an excused absence.
4th grade is a busy grade and a student can fall behind quickly if he/she misses school often. In the event of an absence, missed work will be sent home to be completed and returned to school in a timely manner.
Communication/Take Home Folder:
Email is the best way to communicate. My email is meaghan.thomas@nhcs.net. You may also send a note in your child’s daily folder, leave a message during the school day, or call after 3:00pm. I will respond as soon as possible.
You can look for your child’s take home folder every night. This will contain homework, some classwork, school paperwork & correspondence, daily behavior and more. Please have your child return his/her folder to school every day.
On Tuesdays your child will bring home a graded work folder. It will contain all of the assignments for the previous week that have been taken up for grades. Please take the time to look over your child’s work, discuss it with your child, and return the signed folder on Wednesdays.
Homework:
In 4th grade we follow the NHCS policy for suggested homework practice.
Typically homework consists of a math assignment and a reading assignment, but it will depend on the needs of the students at the time. In addition, students are expected to read 20 minutes a day (honor system: no reading log required)
If you find the homework too difficult for your child, please let me or Mr. Whittle know so that we can re-teach if needed!
Behavior:
Students are expected to adhere to the rules and expectations of the school and classroom.
At WBS we S.U.R.F. (Show responsibility, Use safety, Respect self and others and Focus and work hard).
Failure to meet expectations after a reminder may result in a Behavior Reflection.
Transportation/Dismissal:
All transportation changes need to be in your child’s take home folder or go through the office. I cannot accept a child’s verbal word. Please understand this is for your child’s safety. Please do not leave transportation changes on my voicemail or email, as I may not get to my voicemail or email during the school day.
If you need to check your child out early, please go directly to the office and they will call the classroom.
Snack & Lunch:
We do have snack in 4th grade during Block 1 in the morning. Please send your child with a healthy snack if they choose to bring a snack. We can always use extra snacks (individually packaged goldfish, pretzels, peanut butter crackers, etc) or extra water bottles.
Our lunch time is 12:05-12:30. Lunch is $3.00 for students. You may put also money your child's account for extras, like milk or ice cream.
Students may keep a labeled water bottle in the classroom if desired.
Grades:
Students receive letter grades in 4th grade. The grading scale is as follows:
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = below 60
Itinerants:
Our itinerants schedule is as follows:
Monday – Music
Tuesday – Marine Science
Wednesday – PE (make sure your child wears sneakers!)
Thursday – Art / Enrichment
Friday – Library
Birthdays/Class Treats:
Birthdays are a special time for children! We have a monthly class birthday celebration for all of the students who have birthdays in that particular month. Grade parent will send out the dates/times as well as a sign up for that!
If your child has a summer birthday, we will celebrate it prior to the end of the school year.
Medications:
All medications must be kept in the nurse’s office. By law, we are not allowed to administer any medication in the classroom.
Any prescription medication must have a letter from the physician.
General:
Students should wear safe shoes every day (no flip flops allowed). We will go outside everyday (weather permitting). Please make sure your child wears sneakers on PE day.
Students may want to keep a light jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt in the classroom in case they get chilly.
Please label outerwear, backpacks, lunchboxes, etc. Check the lost and found if something is missing.
