DIRECTIONS FOR ANNOTATED TEXT AND TWO WRITINGS PER PART:
a. Mark at least ten examples of figurative language in each Part. (similes, metaphors, and personification) Make brief notes in the margin or on a post-it about the significance of the five most important examples you marked.
b. On a separate sheet of paper, write the five most important examples of figurative language.
c. On the same sheet of paper, analyze the most powerful example of figurative language. The example you select needs to point to Mr. Bradbury’s message. Write a paragraph explaining the context in which it’s used, its significance, and its impact on the text.
d. Your Reactions/Responses to the text
The other notes on your text will largely be determined by YOU. If you are confused about what to note or the point of noting while you read, please read the following article, “What I Really Want Is Someone Rolling Around in the Text” by Sam Anderson:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/06/magazine/06Riff-t.html
If you are already a believer that you don’t “truly own a book (intellectually, spiritually) until you [have] marked it up” (Anderson) then wild horses couldn’t stop you from tangibly engaging with the words you read.
Here are some simple suggestions for how you can respond/react to the text:
a. ! for insightful parts that evoke a strong reaction/response
b. ? for parts that confuse you
c. Arrows for parts that connect with other parts of the text and/or theme
d. Text for parts that connect to other texts you’ve read and/or movies
e. World for parts that connect with today’s world
f. Me for parts that connect to you personally
g. Imagery for parts that cause me to feel like I’m watching the story, not just reading
h. Syntax for parts of the text that sound like music
Writing symbols/short words in the margin don’t distract me from the joy of reading. If I want to stop and write more of a reaction, I can, but I don’t have to. I have those simple marks that I can return to later.
1. REQUIRED FOR REACTIONS/RESPONSES:
1. You should have at least one symbol/short word per page.
2. 2. For at least ten of those examples, include brief notes in the margin or on post-it notes.
3. 3. On a separate piece of paper, analyze the most insightful part, showing what you gleaned from that part. No obvious and generic responses allowed, please. This should be at least one page.
Each part is too much to read in one sitting so I thought it might help to see where some breaks are in each Part.
