My name is Joelle Newman, and I am very excited to be your child’s PE teacher this year. This is my eighth year teaching at WBS and previously been a parent for 10 years at this wonderful school. My children are Dawson (junior in college), Jadra (freshman in college) and Conrad (11th grade- Hoggard). I grew up in Upstate New York, where I started playing sports at a young age and was positively influenced by my physical education teachers and coaches. I came to North Carolina on a softball scholarship, loved the area, and stayed! I graduated from UNCW with a degree in Health/Physical Education and a degree in Psychology. I previously taught elementary Physical Education for 6 years at Carolina Beach, Bellamy, and Holly Tree. Then I chose to be a stay-at-home mom for 9 years, when I started a small business called P.A.C.E.T. (Parents and Children Exercising Together) to instill in my children the importance of physical activity throughout one’s life and as a family. Ten years ago, I resumed public school teaching at Williston Middle, where I taught Health & PE and coached four sports (Girls Softball, Girls Soccer, Girls Lacrosse, Girls Basketball). I also coached softball at Noble Middle School for three years, and we were the NHCS Champs in 2017!. I feel fortunate to return to the elementary level, where I can stress to the students early on the importance of being healthy and maintaining your health (physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially) throughout one’s life.
The PE curriculum is now taking a swing to promote lifelong fitness and activity. I will be teaching your child basic locomotor skills, basic motor skills, cooperation/team building activities, sport skills activities, and games. My philosophy in our classes is to BE SAFE, HAVE FUN and LEARN, which all cannot be fully accomplished without being a TEAM! We discussed in class what each of these “umbrellas” entail (FUN, SAFETY, LEARNING, and TEAMWORK) and how they are all intertwine for us to have a successful year! Along with our weekly physical activity, my PE helper will read a “Fit Tip of the Week” to convey an important concept of being healthy that we will briefly discuss. Also this year, each month I will introduce the “Muscle of the Month” (last years we did "Bone of the Month!") Please help your child remember what day they have PE, so they can be dressed appropriately for class!
Please feel free to express any PE/health issues/concerns/comments with me through my school email: joelle.newman@nhcs.net .
I look forward to teaching your child and promoting lifelong fitness!
In health,
Coach Newman
