Counseling Services

Individual Counseling:

Individual counseling is available to all students. Typical counseling issues in elementary school may include topics such as anxiety, divorce, grief, anger management, social skills and friendship. Individual counseling in the school setting is intended to be brief. Students are typically not seen by the counselor for more than five sessions.

Group Counseling:

Small group counseling is offered when multiple students present with a similar counseling issue. Groups normally contain six or less students of similar ages. Typical group topics may include grief, social skills, anger management, self-esteem, and divorce. All new students in grades 1-5 will meet with the counselor in small groups to discuss the transition to a new school. This meeting typically happens during the first two weeks of school and is a one-time session.

Classroom Guidance:

Classroom guidance is provided in every classroom once a month. Lessons are typically 45 minutes long and follow the Harmony SEL (social emotional learning) curriculum). The themes for our lessons include Diversity and Inclusion; Empathy and Critical Thinking; Communication; Problem Solving and Peer Relations.

Consultation

I am available to consult with school staff, parents, and community agencies. Sometimes it is necessary to refer families to community agencies if a child could benefit from more intensive services.

Coordination

I work closely with our SEL support staff member to assist teachers with developing behavior interventions for their classrooms or individual students.
