2nd Grade Curriculum

Reading:

We use the Reading Fundamentals curriculum, which teaches comprehension skills and lets students explore various types of books and genres. We will read and assess comprehension, focusing on a specific reading strategy, vocabulary concept and text features. We will also continue to review phonics rules, using our phonics program, Wilson Fundations.

Writing:

We use the Writing Fundamentals curriculum. Students will be taught and expected to use legible handwriting, correct capitalization, correct punctuation, correct spelling based on learned phonics rules and complete sentences. We will learn basic sentence structure, including parts of speech and will begin using simple paragraphs to organize our writing.

Math:

We will cover many concepts using Eureka Squared curriculum. Students will work on the following skills this year: number sense 0-999, place value, addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers, estimation, money, length, time, plane shapes and solid figures, number sentences, data and bar graphs, basic multiplication and division, fractions and patterns.

Science:

The following science units will be taught, one per quarter, according to NC Essential Standards: Amazing Animals (life cycles/ecology), Wonderful Weather, Sensational Sound, and States of Matter.

Social Studies:

The following social studies concepts will be taught according to NC Essential Standards: citizenship, communities, government, geography, natural resources, economics, and technology.
