My name is Heidi Pfirman and am very excited to share my knowledge with my new middle school students!
My experience: I have taught art for over 27 years. I have taught at every grade level from pre school to adults.
Professional membership and leadership: I am a longe time member of the National Art Educators Association and a member of the NC Art Education Association where I held the position of Region 2 Coordinator for several year. These organizations helps organize art teacher communities and plan professional development for teachers. I love learning and sharing with others and have presented and held workshops here in NHCS and at the State level multiple times. In the spirit of sharing knowledge I have worked with four student teachers from several NC Universities. I am very proud to say I have been nominated as my schools "Teacher of the Year " by my peers, twice in my teaching career, an honor I do not take lightly.
Where are you from? I grew up outside of Philadelphia, PA, (GO EAGLES) but have lived in NC since graduating from Lycoming College.
Married: Yes! My husband is also a teacher and so is my sister, my brother in law, my step brother, and Step Dad.
Children: Yes, 2 daughters.
Pets: 2 big doggies that are defiantly my children also.
Favorite food: I like just about everything. Italian, Asian, and Latin American food are my favorites.
Where you “good” at art when you where my age? I always loved art and loved experimenting with art processes. I practiced a lot. Art was my favorite subject because I excelled in the art room while other classes where much more challenging for me do to some learning differences I had to adapt to.
When did you know you were going to be a teacher? When I was nine, I used to make the neighborhood children play school with me, Iwas the art teacher, so I guess I always new. Later, as a collage student, I worked with a group of kids after school. I had to keep them busy so I showed them some art tricks, and I knew right away. They loved it and so did I, and my mind was made up.
Do you make your own art? YES! I paint with watercolor and acrylics. I paint tiles and glass too. I have more recently ventured into making jewelry with leather and yarn. I illustrated my first book in 2020, called, Callan The Christmas Tree, by local Author Katie Kilson. Seeing our book on the shelf at Barnes and Noble was surreal, as it was a bucket list dream of mine and I hope to do it again someday.
