What is Title IX?

Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs and activities that receive federal funding: 

What it covers
Title IX protects students from discrimination based on sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and pregnancy. It also prohibits retaliation. 

What it prohibits
Title IX prohibits conduct such as sexual harassment, sexual violence, relationship violence, stalking, and gender discrimination.

Who enforces it
The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) of the United States Department of Education enforces Title IX.

History
President Richard M. Nixon signed Title IX into law in 1972 as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. In 2002, it was renamed the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.
