For example, if you start re-telling the plot of a story in the present tense, don’t switch to the past tense:
✗Jean Val Jean began (past tense) his life in poverty. He then steals (present tense) a loaf of bread to feed his family. As a result of this, he went (past tense) to prison.
✓Jean Val Jean begins his life in poverty. He then steals a loaf of bread to feed his family. As a result of this, he goes to prison. (all present tense)
Or
✓ Val Jean began his life in poverty. He then stole a loaf of bread to feed his family. As a result of this, he went to prison. (all past tense)
