To celebrate Pi Day on March 14th, Ronald Reagan High School’s chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society worked towards breaking the world record for longest continuous paper chain rendition of Pi, with each different color representing a digit 0-9.
Hundreds of Reagan students worked together and crafted small sections of the chain, documenting their progress along the way. These sections were then linked together to form a massive, 80,001 link chain that stretches over 4,000 feet long!
While the primary goal of the undertaking was to defeat the original 75,000 link record, the Pi Chain also served to unify members of the Mu Alpha Theta and the Reagan math community as a whole. According to junior Sage Tuchsen, the pi chain “brought all of the students together through a shared love of math.” Mu Alpha Theta President and Reagan senior Sophia Su said of the project, “Working on the Pi Chain with my peers was truly a once in a lifetime experience, a difficult but rewarding accomplishment.”
You can now view the Pi Chain at the exhibition hall of Stone Oak’s Parman Library.
