The Lewis Howe Horticulture Agents Award is dedicated to the memory of Lewis Stillman Howe III. Lewis was a dedicated educator and friend of the green industry. He was passionate about his work, an enthusiastic teacher of horticulture and loved plants. Lewis' energy was shared with all those whose lives he touched. Lewis started working for North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, Wilson County, in 1989. In 1995, he served both Lenior and Wayne counties and at the time of his death was the horticulture agent in Wayne County. Lewis was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2000. He was cancer free when he unexpectedly died of a heart attack on September 29, 2002.
At the October 2002 North Carolina Association of County Agricultural Agents board meeting, the board voted to include the “Lewis Stillman Howe III Horticulture Scholarship” available from the North Carolina Agricultural Agents Association endowment, under the selection process of the Horticulture Committee.
The North Carolina County Agricultural Agents Association endowment goal of $15,000 began with a donation of $4,310 from active and retired Extension personnel and people who work in the green industry. The Rolander Family Foundation in 2010-2011 stepped forward with gifts totaling $11,200 to complete the endowment.
Awards from this Endowment can be used for 1) graduate program expenses in horticulture science, agricultural and extension education, or related discipline and/or 2) participating in a professional development/training experience to enhance agent responsibilities and/or 3) for creating a demonstration garden/teaching site and/or 4) for other purposes approved by the Horticulture committee that contribute to the professional development of a Horticulture Extension Agent.
The amount of the scholarship is to be $500 annually.
Applications must be submitted to the State Horticulture Chair by April 1 of each year. The State Horticulture Committee will select the first place winner and a runner up in case the winner is not able to accept the award. The State Extension Director must approve all nominees.
Criteria for selection of recipients to receive award:
Previous recipients may apply, but preference will be given to first-time applicants.
The award is given as a reimbursement through the NC Agricultural Foundation.
Selection of agent(s) shall be based on their application of interpersonal skills, growth potential, motivation, performance of duties, and progress made in carrying out a successful Horticulture program in their area of work and their involvement in their professional organization, NCACAA.
The recipient must be employed by the NCCES at the time of the presentation. If a recipient resigns before the Annual Meeting of NCACAA in the year in which he/she is to receive the award, the nominee will be ineligible to receive the award.
Each nominee should complete the official award form, that can be found above.
Lewis Howe Horticulture Agent Graduate Award winners will be listed in the Annual Report of the Association.
